Authority Marketing, Expert Positioning, Personal Branding – Wait, aren’t they all the same? Or are they? Some might dismiss this as just semantics, but in our book there is a difference.
- “Authorities” can be experts, but usually are more apt to rely on their “position or role” to establish credibility with their audience. Think police officers, judges, preachers, ceo’s etc.
- “Personal branders” is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands, but may not have any specific expertise or apparent or perceived authority. Think Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, etc.
- “Experts” have acquired an extensive knowledgebase/experience on a particular subject or field, but may not have a captive audience yet. Think you, starting out.
So before you start reaching out to companies, you really should understand what position you are in or would like to be in, whether it be as an authority, brand, or expert.
